“Voices of the Young Church” Shared at Christian Unity Service

February 21, 2013

On Sunday, January 27, 2013 Christians from throughout the community gathered at Abiding Hope Lutheran Church to pray for Christian Unity at ICM’s 2013 Ecumenical Worship Service.  Primordial drumming — as if from the very beginning of creation — opened the afternoon’s call to worship.  Prayers of praise and thanksgiving, as well as prayers for forgiveness and reconciliation were offered throughout the afternoon.  Music filled our souls and inflamed our hearts with “Let There Be Peace on Earth” … “The Canticle of the Turning” … and “We Are Called…to act with justice…to love tenderly…to serve one another…to walk humbly with God.”  Ms. Lalida Raj led us in a prayerful chant in Indian dialect and we greeted each other in peace… “Namaste.”

“Voices of the Young Church” quieted and inspired us…words of wisdom gleaned from Mercyhurst University students when asked what they would like to say to the leaders of today’s local Christian community.  In reflection of the walk to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35), the students responded… “Will you walk alongside us for a while? … We are young Christians.  Some of us call ourselves Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Evangelical or Nondenominational.  Some of us just want to be called Christian.  Some of us aren’t sure what we should be called… Our journey is confusing; our hearts long for a home… Show us a place where the new person, the stranger, is noticed and cared for and made to feel important… Preach the Gospel to us, and help us to make sense of this story in light of the fast-paced multitasking world we are trying to navigate… Preach to us about forgiving enemies, about peace and justice, and about what discipleship looks like in this day and age…” …and there’s so much more.

Let’s really listen to the voices of the young church and walk alongside these young disciples…working together…united in faith…we can do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.  Amen…and Namaste!
