Local Clergy Reflect on BEM

September 16, 2011

On Thursday morning, a small group of local clergy gathered for the first of a 5-part Clergy Seminar designed to reflect upon and discuss “BEM” — “Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry.” Rev. John Downey, NWPA Episcopal Diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer, facilitated the discussion among the twelve representative clergy from various traditions around the table.2012 will mark the 30th Anniversary since “BEM” (Faith and Order Paper No. 111) was adopted at a World Council of Churches Faith and Order commission meeting in Lima, Peru. Throughout the years, “BEM” has been a basis for many “mutual recognition” agreements among various church traditions and remains a reference today.

Clergy interested in this topic are welcome to join in as the group continues to meet on the third Thursday of each month, through January 2012. The next gathering will be on Thursday, October 20 at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 W. 7th Street, Erie.
